Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Before a contractor can quote a water heater replacement here, they have to establish what fuel the house runs on and whether the existing venting can handle what goes in. Utility gas heats more occupied homes in New Castle County, Delaware than any other fuel, at 53.8% (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A gas water heater draws combustion air and exhausts flue gases through a vent stack, and the condition and diameter of that stack determines whether the new unit can be a direct-vent, power-vent, or atmospheric model. Getting that wrong on installation means a unit that either fails inspection or vents improperly. The fuel majority here is large enough that most installs the contractor sees are gas replacements, which means the vent assessment comes before the equipment selection, not after.

Ductwork is not the question on a water heater job, but the electrical panel is. Half the homes in New Castle County, Delaware were built in 1975 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Houses built for that era's appliances were wired to match them, and what a contractor finds at the panel determines whether a new water heater goes in cleanly or whether the service board needs work first. The unit a homeowner selects and the breaker capacity available are often a mismatch, and resolving that gap is where the real scope of the job gets decided.

What Gets Installed With a New Water Heater

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small single-storey house with a dark tiled gable roof, showing interior rooms with a bathtub, toilet, sinks, beds and a cylindrical water heater tank with a flue pipe running through the roof.

The tank is the center of the system. It sits in a utility room, basement, or closet and holds a reservoir of water that a gas burner or electric heating element, mounted inside the lower portion of the tank, brings up to temperature. A flue or exhaust vent runs from the top of a gas unit out through the wall or roof.

The cold water inlet pipe feeds into the top of the tank, and the hot water outlet pipe carries heated water out to the rest of the house. A pressure relief valve mounts on the side of the tank as a safety device, and a drain valve near the base lets a contractor flush sediment from the bottom.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your house specifically.

Severe Weather Events in New Castle County

Extreme weather puts a hard load on water heaters, forcing them to recover faster and run longer than they would in mild conditions. How much of that stress a unit faces depends on where it sits, which makes local weather history a practical factor in sizing and installation decisions.
